Realistic expectations are not a virtue today. We want what we want and we want it now.
Websites for $299. Ads that promise “we can get you top rankings in Google”, or one of my favorites, “I’ll give you 1,000 links for just $19.99”
I see those ads and think, Are you kidding me? But these gimmicks work. Many business owners fall for these snake oil schemes because they all have one thing in common-they are willing to suspend reality. They want to be successful to such a degree that they are willing to forego their own experience and place their trust in these unrealistic claims. The truth is you can get a website for $299. What you won’t get is a website that is user-friendly, scalable (expandable), or one that allows plugins. You won’t get a site that allows you to create multiple pages of content-the driving force behind search engine optimization.
If anyone promises you “top rankings in Google” run the other way. No one can promise that. For one thing, your company may end up ranking well for one or more keywords but fall short with other keywords. While search engine ranking is not an exact science, Google has said that content is king. The business that works consistently to provide its users with fresh, creative, and informative content will eventually rank well. Even then the content must be well-written using a sound keyword strategy. All of this takes time and will never happen overnight.
In spite of its high tech reputation, the Internet rewards old fashioned values such as hard work, creativity, and consistency. Website design is important but good content trumps design every time. That takes time and a lot of effort. If you own your own business and don’t have the time or the ability to write for your site, hire a professional that knows how to do it. Be patient and know that the process will take time. Know going into the process that you are making an investment and that this is not a quick fix.
