Lawyer Marketing: Don’t Cheat When it Comes to Web Content

There are a few other things to mention in marketing for law firms. The competition is very, very intense. Those who have websites and/or blogs are in direct competition with each other and some firms have hired marketing firms to do the writing for them. This is a good idea as long as you can trust the firm you hired. There’s a great deal of web copy and blog copy that’s duplicate content ie. it’s plagiarized from another site or another publication. This can happen without the law firm’s knowledge and place the firm in legal jeopardy. Additionally, duplicate content is a major no-no with Google. If Google finds duplicate content on your site, Google will penalize you. The unscrupulous firms that copy and paste content on another site have caused a great deal of problems for unsuspecting businesses, but most especially law firms.

If your law firm is looking to hire a company to provide good web content for a website or a blog, make sure they understand that they MUST provide fresh, original content. You can’t emphasize enough that you won’t tolerate stealing someone else’s content. Also, the firm’s webmaster may be able to provide gatekeeper services for you so that you are aware if duplicate content is occurring.

The best advice I can give on this issue is to hire folks who know how to write. Those who know how to research and write won’t be tempted to duplicate content in order to meet a deadline or provide fresh content. They have the ability to provide unique, quality content without cheating. You’ll be better off in the long run and can sleep better at night knowing you’re doing the right thing.
